Where to Party

Uptown After Hours
By Emmaline Harvey

May brings an endless list of reasons to visit the Queen City—the Wachovia Championship, the Coca-Cola 600, and numerous other NASCAR events. But the fun doesn’t stop when the gates close—let the good times roll well into the night by visiting these local late-night hot spots.

Kick the evening off with a game or two of pool at Cans Bar and Canteen (500 W. 5th St., 704-940-0200) in Center City Charlotte. As the jukebox plays both current and classic rock songs on the main floor, friends can relax in the comfy booths, raised slightly from the crowded floor bustling with impromptu games and friendly gatherings, and enjoy mingling with the young adults of Charlotte. For those more interested in dancing than relaxing, head to the lounge downstairs on any weekend night, where the hottest dance tunes are playing. Cans has a library of premium liquors, wines, specialty drinks, bottled beers, and over 50 canned beers, making it hard to dissatisfy thirsty taste buds. For those desiring a distinct taste, Cans brewery produces a unique selection of beers ensuring fresh taste to all who care to partake. If you’re tired of the same mixed drinks that you order at every bar, just mention to one of the speedy bartenders what you usually like, and watch them whip up three or four new concoctions you’ll instantly love. While trying out a new favorite drink, play classic arcade games or pool while watching favorite movies like “Scarface” or the big game on any of the bar’s 12 television screens. With everyday specials that fulfill thirst and hunger (check out their old-school Mac ‘n Cheese or tater tots)—as well as a lack of cover charge—it’s hard not to drop in and have some fun seven days a week from 11am-2am.

You’ve seen the TV show, now come experience the fun yourself at Coyote Ugly Saloon (521 N. College St., 704-347-6869). This bar has a unique name but it sure doesn’t describe the staff. Beautiful women will serve and entertain you with crazy dancing, singing, and crafty bar tricks. Check out their fantastic drink specials every night of the week: S.I.N.full Sundays with $3 U-call-it wells and $2 Budweisers, Tuesday-boozeday with $4 SoCo Limes and $2 Domestics, Whiskey Wednesdays with $4 Whiskey drinks and $2 Domestics, Ladies’ Night Thursdays highlighting their $4 Bombs, $3 Margaritas, and $2 Kamikazes, Freaky Fridays featuring $3 U-call-it-wells and $2 Miller Lites, and $2 Bud Lights and $5 liquor on Saturday. Coyote Ugly Saloon is open Monday-Friday from 4pm-2am and weekends from 12pm-2am.

When the pizza is voted best in Charlotte, you know it’s good. No wonder Brixx Woodfired Pizza (225 E. 6th St., 704-347-2749) is also a  great late-night spot! With 14 wines by the glass and 24 beers on tap, you can sit back and relax with friends, knowing there will be something on the menu to satisfy your craving. In addition to their vast selection of award-winning pizza, Brixx offers a delicious assortment of sandwiches, pasta, and salads. The warm atmosphere, pizza, and drink specials are sure to help you welcome in the summer season. Sundays are half-price wines, and Wednesdays feature an extended Happy Hour (two-for-one pizza) from 10pm-1am. Brixx is open until 1am Monday through Saturday, and until 11pm on Sunday.

If a live band is what you’re feeling, then check out Double Door Inn (1218 Charlottetowne Ave., 704-376-1446). This blues bar has been in Charlotte since 1973 and is the second oldest blues bar in the country! It’s seen its fair share of the great blues artists like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton and features regular shows with rising artists as well as established Charlotte legends. Double Door has a full bar to satisfy your thirst as you’re jamming out to the great music. Double Door opens 11am Monday-Friday and Saturday at 8:30pm.
