TRIP's Review of Sushi @ The Lake

Tucked in the back of a shopping center in northern Mecklenburg County, Sushi @ The Lake takes the joy of a fine sushi bar and teppanyaki restaurant and updates it with California rock-n-roll sass.  The sushi bar here hums along with the separate but adjacent full bar.  Other patrons sit at dining tables around the room or at hibachi grills where chefs wield their talents . . . and utensils.  Rock-n-roll music bounces, large-screen TVs flash, and mirrored balls send sparkles over the crowd.  Beyond the wide array of traditional nigiri and maki sushi selections, specialty rolls include Chef Hiro’s with salmon, scallop, and avocado; and the aptly named Chef Tim’s Smackdown Roll, with spicy softshell crab, yellowtail, smoked salmon, smelt roe, and cucumber. Standout appetizers include Maui Tuna diced with pineapple and avocado seasoned with spicy sesame sauce; or Yellowtail Cheek, a delicacy charbroiled and glazed with house special barbeque sauce.  Teppanyaki meals include jumbo shrimp, scallops, Chilean seabass, and lobster along with chicken and beef selections.
