Aren't
things supposed to cool down in the fall?
Apparently NASCAR never got that memo. This
October, the finest drivers and crews that stock
car racing have to offer will make their second
trip of 2007 to the Charlotte region for four
days of fast action. It’s all part of the annual
fall pilgrimage the boys of NASCAR make to
Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord.
The fun begins Wednesday night,
October 10. That's when the World of Outlaws
takes over the dirt track at Lowe's Motor
Speedway. The Jani-King Southern Showdown has
been a mainstay at the speedway since the dirt
track debuted in 2000. The World of Outlaws
series has produced some of racing's biggest
stars including Jeff Gordon and the winningest
dirt track driver of all time,Steve Kinser.
Kinser will have to defend the dirt against a
special guest this October. NASCAR superstar
Ryan Newman will return to his dirt track roots
as he has thrown his name in the hat to compete
in the showdown.
Thursday evening, October 11,
will see the return of the fan-friendly festival
known as Bojangles' Pole Night. NEXTEL Cup
qualifying is combined with Busch Series
practice runs and a Legends race, making for one
of the most popular qualifying events on the
circuit.
On October 12 the drivers from
the Busch circuit take to the track. The Dollar
General 300 runs at Lowe’s Motor Speedway just
after 8pm. A field of more than 40 drivers will
be looking to oust Carl Edwards, the series
leader in points and top-five finishes. Edwards
will have to contend with big names like Greg
Biffle and Kevin Harvick. And Charlotte is a
popular spot for parttime Busch drivers to get
back in the car on the junior circuit. Kasey
Kahne, Matt Kenseth, and Tony Stewart are all
faces you could see behind the wheel Friday
night.
The
NEXTEL Cup Series championship is narrowed down
to 12 drivers. Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup
qualifiers, including Gordon, Stewart, and
Jimmie Johnson, will be jockeying for points in
the only Saturday-night race in the
competition—the Bank of America 500—on Saturday,
October 13. The event has changed names over a
half-dozen times since its inception in 1960,
but one thing has remained constant through the
years: excitement. And the race has become even
more exciting since 2002 when it became the only
night race on the circuit. A list of winners of
the Charlotte fall race reads like a “Who's Who”
of stock car racing: Richard Petty, Dale
Jarrett, Junior Johnson, Dale Earnhardt, Bill
Elliot, and Cale Yarborough have all taken home
the checkered flag in Concord. Current stars
like Kahne, Johnson, Stewart, and Gordon have
all won the fall event as well.
The best bet for fans is the
October Super ticket. For just $99, fans get
tickets to Wednesday night's dirt track action,
Thursday's Pole Night, Friday's Busch Series
race, and Saturday's NEXTEL Cup action. Other
ticket options are out there as well. For more
